Coconut Oil over EVERYTHING!
If you know me you KNOW how I feel about coconut oil. I absolutely live for the stuff!! Last year in our dorm room I wrote a song about coconut oil (as a joke of course c’mon now) and it has basically become my theme song. If someone asked me what single item I would need if I was stranded on a desert island, it would have to be coconut oil. Except, of course, if the island had coconut than I would probably be able to get my own… so then it would be my phone. ANYWAY I think you get the point: I love coconut oil. So I decided I would share my favorite coconut oil benefits and top 5 uses!
Coconut Oil Benefits:
1. Skin care
I have extremely dry, sensitive skin, so lotion just doesn’t cut it for me. When I was a sophomore in high school I tried using coconut oil on my skin instead of lotion and the difference was INSANE. I love that it’s all natural so I’m not putting weird chemicals on my skin. Also, it has anti-aging benefits whooo!!
I use coconut oil morning and night. Always make sure to use sunscreen with a high SPF if you put it on in the morning. This is my favorite sunscreen.. I wear it everyday! Also, keep in mind that if you are prone to whiteheads or blackheads, you may want to stay away from using pure coconut oil because it can clog pores.
Instead, use a product that contains coconut oil so you can still get the benefits without breaking out. I LOVE this brand, and all their products contain coconut oil. The Coconut Cleansing Oil is my fav because it isn’t drying which is a must for me, especially in the winter! I suggest purchasing this gift pack so you can test out all the skincare products and see if you like them as much as I do!!
2. Hair Care
Whenever my hair is feeling dry and brittle I like to do a coconut oil mask and it always bounces back. To do this, cover your dry hair, below your ears, in coconut oil and let it sit for about 20 minutes. A LITTLE BIT GOES A LONG WAY, using too much oil on your hair can have the opposite affect that you’re looking for. Use about a dime size amount of oil for this. After 20 minutes (or more if you’re feeling frisky) wash your hair like normal.
WARNING: if you have strong and thick hair I would research this further. There are some sites that say it can do more harm than good for this kind of hair. For those of you who have finer hair like me give it a go and see how you like it.
3. Random Beauty Benefits
There are so many things coconut oil can do. Put it in your shower and use it as shaving cream. This actually works so well and leaves your legs feeling silky smooth rather than dried out which is how my legs typically feel after using shaving cream. One downside is that it doesn’t rinse out of your razor as easily as shaving cream and can clog it up.
I also LOVE using it as makeup remover!! Rub it on a wash clothe and it will take your makeup right off, once again not leaving your skin dry like so many makeup removers do. Be careful not to tug too hard on your skin while doing you don’t want to get wrinkles!
Coconut oil pulling is a very popular use of coconut oil and, if you can stand the taste, is extremely effective at not only whitening your teeth but also freshening your breath and just overall oral health. Some sources even claim that it can improve acne, sore throats even heart disease! Basically, all you do is swish 1-2 teaspoons of coconut oil around in your mouth for about 20 minutes everyday or as often as possible. Be sure not to swallow the oil because at the end it will be full of the toxins and bacteria that were in your mouth, not what you want in your body lol! It is also important to spit it out in the trash, not the sink, when you’re done. Because coconut oil is a solid at its natural state, spitting it down the drain can clog your pipes!
There are a few healthy oils out there that are used for cooking such as olive oil. However, most of these oils, break down easily at high temperatures, destroying the beneficial fats they contain. What healthy oil doesn’t do this? COCONUT OIL! That’s right our fav oil is one of the best oils for cooking. I use it to cook anything I make in a pan on the stove (eggs, stir fry etc.) and use it for baking!!
5. Overall Health
Coconut oil is extremely beneficial for your health. While this has been controversial because coconut oil is a saturated fat, recent research has shown that not all saturated fats are equal. It does raise your cholesterol but mainly HDL (the healthy kind of cholesterol that you WANT to be high). The beneficial fats in coconut oil make it amazing for our digestion. On top of that, healthy fats are what keep us full (a.k.a. what keeps us from eating our body weight in chips). I like to eat a spoonful of coconut oil everyday. I have found this trick to be especially helpful in college where avocados- my fav healthy fat- are nonexistent. Coconut oil is also great for hormone and immune system support- also important in college!!
As if it wasn’t already clear, I LOVE COCONUT OIL. I hope this helped you and gave you some inspiration on how you can incorporate coconut oil into you’re everyday routine. I personally could not survive without the stuff and I want to share my love with everyone I can!! Merry Christmas!
