The school year is almost here and for all you incoming freshman girls that means one thing: Sorority Recruitment!
As rising sophomores, we went through this process last year and are full of advice on how to have an amazing Recruitment!!
Tip #1 Don’t worry about chapter stereotypes
Every chapter at every university has a stereotype and that is just what they are STEREOTYPES!! I came to Texas all the way from Minnesota and knew absolutely nothing about the chapters at TCU. As I went through recruitment I found out that my favorite chapter (the one I am currently in) is known as being the “Texas girls” chapter and you essentially have to be from Texas to get it. Obviously this was totally not the case and had me stressing for no reason!! If someone is trying to tell you something negative about a chapter you like just tune them out and remind yourself of all the amazing things that you love about them and more importantly don’t be the girl that is saying the negative things.
Tip #2: Don’t worry about what your friends are going
I am so guilty of this and totally get how hard it is! When you think you already have a group of friends, all you want to do is be in the same house! But truthfully, you have to stay open minded about all the amazing girls you could become friends with in any house! When I got cut from the house I knew all my friends at the time and Ellie were going, I thought I was going to be so left out. My aunt told me: “Grace, you don’t even know these girls you think you’re friends with..” I was so naive, if only I had known about the best friends I have made in house I’m in right now. I got so hung up on the fact that I wasn’t going to be with a particular group of girls. Truthfully even if I was in their house I don’t think I would be friends with them anyway! The house I’m in now fits me so well, and have the most amazing friend group. As much as I would love to be in the same house as Ellie, it doesn’t hinder our friendship at all. It’s also really fun to be able to take each other to our sorority’s events! Everything always works out for the best!
Tip #3: Look nice and follow your own style
Some girls think that you need to have a certain imagine in order to have a successful rush but the truth is that YOU SHOULD FOLLOW YOUR OWN STYLE! If you’re all about Lilly Pulitzer and pearls then by all means wear that. But don’t be afraid to be decked out in Urban or Free People if thats your thing, there are so many types of girls in sororities not just the stereotypical sorority girl!!
The key is to look presentable and put together. Remember that you are dressing for girls, they don’t want to see you in a super low-cut dress or shorts that are a little too short! And don’t forget to accessorize!!!!!!!
Tip #4: Advocate for yourself
Obviously don’t obnoxiously brag about yourself, but talk yourself up when asked about what you did in high school, ect. A very common question during fall recruitment is “what did you do this summer?” When asked this I talked about the event the other seniors on my dance team and I helped organize for childhood cancer. Also, I mentioned that I went to dance Nationals with my team and we got First Place!! I know that Grace talked about the National geographic trip she attended. No one else is going to fight for yourself as much as you so you need to make sure you are (humbly) talking yourself up. What stands you apart from the crowd?
Tip #5: Keep a positive mindset
We totally get that this process can be draining, but keep an open and positive mind about every house. Even if you aren’t a fan of a certain house, NEVER talk bad about them. The worst thing ever was talking to another PNM that was so incredibly negative it just brings the whole room down. It’s a difficult process no matter what but it is going to be 10 time worse if all you think is how much it sucks, not to mention the chapters will pick up on your negativitiy.
But what do I wear????!!!!
